Hreflang Tag Generator

An hreflang tag generator builds the tags that tell Google about the language and regional versions of a page. Enter each language code with its URL, add an optional x-default page, and this free tool checks the codes and writes HTML link tags, an HTTP Link header or sitemap entries. Every version lists itself and all the others.

Language & Region Versions

What is a hreflang tag generator and when should you use it?

Hreflang tags connect versions of the same page written for different languages or regions, so Google can show the right one to each searcher. The set must be complete and the same on every version. Use one method only: link tags, a header or a sitemap. Check an existing set with the Hreflang Checker, build sitemaps with the Hreflang XML Sitemap Generator, verify reciprocity with the Hreflang Return Tag Validator, check language codes via the Hreflang Language Code Validator, plan architectures using the International URL Structure Planner, generate roadmaps with the Multilingual SEO Checklist Generator, and map country targets using the Country Targeting URL Mapper. In addition, resolve conflicts using the Hreflang Conflict Detector, inspect fallbacks with the X-Default Hreflang Checker, and prevent de-indexing using the International Canonical Conflict Checker. You can also create sitemaps with the XML Sitemap Generator.

How do you use it?

  1. Add one row per language version with its code and full URL.
  2. Add an x-default URL if you have a fallback page.
  3. Press Generate.
  4. Pick a method: link tags, header or sitemap.
  5. Add the same set to every version of the page.

Result interpretation & practical applications

When evaluating the output of the hreflang tag generator, review the parsed metrics against your specific site architecture. Outputs are formatted for direct implementation into your HTML source, web server configuration, or Google Search Console audit files.

Always inspect generated values for contextual nuance. Automated tools highlight structural patterns, but manual verification confirms that technical directives align with your overarching SEO strategy.

Technical rules and limitations

  • Each version must list itself and all other versions, using full URLs with http or https.
  • If two pages do not point to each other, the tags are ignored.
  • Codes are an ISO 639-1 language code with an optional ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 region; a region alone is not valid, and codes such as es-419 are not supported.
  • x-default marks the fallback page for unmatched languages.
  • The three methods are equivalent; using more than one brings no benefit.

These rules come from Google's guide to localized versions of your pages.

Common mistakes and troubleshooting

  • Forgetting the self-referencing tag.
  • Using a region code alone, such as gb.
  • Using uk instead of gb, or eu.
  • Using relative URLs.
  • Adding hreflang through two methods at once.
